The Parroquia de San Emilio stands in Madrid’s Elipa neighborhood. Its story began in the mid-20th century. The then Bishop of Madrid, Monsignor Casimiro Morcillo, established the parish in 1965.
But before the physical church existed community members gathered in different places. They met in a hermitage and then in a house. Later they gathered in a school using a portable altar. These early gatherings laid the foundation for the church we see today.
The construction of the Parroquia de San Emilio was a community effort. Funds were raised by the faithful. A circular was distributed throughout the neighborhood in 1970. It announced the upcoming construction of the temple. The total budget was five million pesetas. The Archdiocese provided three million and the land. The remaining two million were requested from the 13500 parishioners.
Interestingly the church’s name has a personal connection. It was chosen in honor of the father of the first parish priest Don Abel Blanco Moreno. This adds a layer of intimacy to the church’s identity.
In 2015-2016 the Parroquia de San Emilio celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was a Jubilee Year marked by special events. The Archbishop of Madrid Monsignor Carlos Osoro visited. He presided over a solemn Eucharist. During the Mass he administered the sacraments of Confirmation and Baptism. A festive gathering followed the celebration.
During the Jubilee Year, the Pope granted special indulgences. Parishioners could receive plenary indulgence on specific dates. These dates included Christmas Easter and the feast of San Emilio. To receive it they had to fulfill certain conditions. They needed Communion Confession and prayer for the Holy Father.
Today the Parroquia de San Emilio continues to be a vibrant center of faith. It offers regular masses confession and pastoral care. Various groups meet here. These include bible study groups and the Legion of Mary. The church is located on Travesia Jose Noriega. Its doors are open to all. The parish priest Luis Maria Hourcade welcomes everyone to participate in the life of the church.
