“The bells of Parroquia de San Basilio el Grande. Their sound echoes through the Chopera district.”

Welcome to Parroquia de San Basilio el Grande a relatively young church in Madrid. It’s a vibrant part of the Arganzuela district. Its story is one of growth and community. It wasn’t always here.

In 1965 the church was established. It was carved from the larger Parroquia de la Beata Mª Ana de Jesús. This was necessary to serve the many new families moving into the rapidly expanding neighborhood. The official date is July 1st 1965. Don Casimiro Morcillo González the Archbishop of Madrid-Alcalá made it official. Don Basilio Fernández Rojo became its first parish priest on August 6th of the same year.

Building the church happened in two phases. The main temple and essential facilities were completed in 1968. Later in 1972 further expansions began. These included a community center housing and additional meeting rooms. Those early years were tough. The community worked hard. They faced challenges but remained committed. Today Parroquia de San Basilio el Grande serves a community of around 10000 people.

The church’s namesake Saint Basil the Great was a significant figure. Born around 329 AD in Cesarea Capadocia (modern-day Kayseri Turkey) he came from a deeply Christian family. He studied in major cities. He pursued learning in Cesarea Byzantium and Athens. There he met Gregorio of Nazianzus. They shared a thirst for knowledge. Eventually Basil abandoned his worldly pursuits. He felt a deep pull toward a life devoted to the gospel. He journeyed to Alexandria Egypt and other areas. He met ascetics and monastic communities. These experiences influenced his life deeply.

Basil’s life was full of service and leadership. He served as bishop of Cesarea. He was a significant figure in the defense of the Trinitarian dogma. He addressed the schism in Antioch. He faced persecution and misunderstanding. Yet his unwavering dedication to the church made him a respected figure. He died January 1st 379 AD. His contributions earned him the title “Magno” the Great.
