Picture the bustling streets of Madrid. Now imagine a haven of peace nestled within. This is the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with a simple need. In the 1960s a new highway divided the neighborhoods of La Piovera and Las Palomas. These communities lacked a church. Their residents travelled to the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Blanca in Canillejas for religious services.
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas was born from this need. In 1973 a meeting was held to establish a parish for La Piovera and Las Palomas. The meeting included the Auxiliary Bishop Ricardo Blanco priests Lorenzo Gutiérrez and Antonio Algara and parishioner Jesús Melián. They planned to build a new church. This church would be named Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas.
The construction of the initial Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas was a community effort. Between 1974 and 1976 temporary spaces were adapted. These were located where Caja Madrid offices now stand. The project was funded partly by Vallehermoso SA and partly by donations from parishioners. The church was inaugurated in March 1976. A special mass was celebrated by Bishop Vicente Enrique Tarancón Ricardo Blanco and the parish priest Antonio Algara.
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas continued to grow. Father Jesús Sahuquillo became parish priest in 1985. He initiated plans for a larger parish complex. This ambitious project took place on land provided by the Bishopric on Calle Espirea. Construction began in 1995 and concluded in 1998. The new complex included the church and additional facilities. Funding came from the sale of old parish premises and the parish priest’s house. Parishioner donations also helped fund the project.
The grand opening of the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas complex was a momentous occasion. Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela presided over the ceremony. He blessed the cornerstone in 1996 and inaugurated the complex in 1998. The complex stands as a testament to the faith and dedication of the community. It represents years of hard work and sacrifice. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas continues to serve its community. It offers a welcoming space for spiritual growth and fellowship. The church stands as a beacon of hope in the heart of Madrid.
