On December 26 1902 a cornerstone was laid. This marked the beginning of the Parroquia Concepcion de Nuestra Senora. This wasn’t just any church. It was destined to become the most important parish in Madrid’s Barrio de Salamanca. Before its construction a smaller simpler church stood on the corner of Calles Hermosilla and Claudio Coello. This humble predecessor was soon to be replaced by a grander structure.

The architect Jimenez Corera initially oversaw the project. Sadly he passed away in 1910. Another architect Jesus Carrasco took over. He completed the construction. The new church was inaugurated on May 11 1914. King Alfonso XIII himself attended the grand opening.

The Parroquia Concepcion de Nuestra Senora is a stunning example of Neo-Gothic architecture. Its imposing 44-meter-high tower commands attention. Atop the tower stands a large iron spire crowned by an image of the Virgin Mary. Some say it initially boasted a halo of electric lightbulbs. A rather unusual detail for a church.

The basilica’s crypt holds the remains of notable members of Madrid’s bourgeoisie and nobility. Among them is the renowned writer Emilia Pardo Bazan. Her death centenary was celebrated in 2021. The church also boasts a rectory and a parish school located on either side of the apse.

The Parroquia Concepcion de Nuestra Senora is more than just a place of worship. It is a significant landmark in Madrid’s history. A testament to architectural skill and a repository of significant memories. It stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Madrid. Its story continues to unfold within its hallowed walls. A beacon of faith and history in the heart of Salamanca.
