Considering its central location the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi stands as a testament to Barcelona’s rich history. It is a beacon of Catalan Gothic architecture. Let’s delve into the basilica’s story a tale of faith resilience and legends.

The name Santa Maria del Pi translates to St. Mary of the Pine. This name originates from a legend. It tells of a sailor who discovered an image of the Virgin Mary in a pine tree. This sacred event led to the construction of a Romanesque church in the ninth century. The current basilica was built to replace this earlier church.

Construction began in 1322 but faced delays due to the Black Death. The basilica was finally consecrated in 1391. Its bell tower however took even longer to complete from 1379 to 1453. Pere IV of Aragon funded the tower’s construction.

The bell tower is not without its own legend. The architect Bartomeu Mas supposedly made a pact with the devil. He would give his soul upon completing the tower’s hundredth step. Construction went smoothly until the ninety-ninth step. Mas halted his work focusing on other parts of the church. He died before finishing the tower. Another architect completed the tower afterward. Legend says the devil stormed the tower in anger. He stamped his foot on the hundredth step. This caused it to sink slightly.

Throughout its history the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi has endured much damage. An earthquake in 1428 caused serious damage. Bombings in 1714 during the War of the Spanish Succession also took their toll. The Spanish Civil War saw a fire gut much of the church’s interior. Yet each time the basilica has been restored.

The exterior of Santa Maria del Pi is austere. Notice the porticoes surrounding each of the three doors. Look for the graffiti PLAÇA DEL MILICIA DESCONEGUT. It is said to be the oldest in Barcelona. It dates back to the Spanish Civil War.

Inside the basilica a large central nave awaits. Twelve side chapels are each dedicated to a saint. Stained-glass windows filter light creating a serene atmosphere. The Rose Window above the entrance is particularly impressive. It dates back to the fourteenth century. It was most recently replaced in 1940.

The altar is simple. It was built in 1967. Behind it stands a statue of the Virgin Mary created by Enric Monjo in 1973. To the left of the altar is the crypt. It serves as a museum. It is occasionally used for musical recitals. To the right a doorway leads to the bell tower and a small museum. Silverware dioramas and military models related to the Siege of Barcelona in 1714 are on display. Even cannonballs fired at the basilica can be seen.

Behind the basilica a small walled garden provides a quiet escape. The highlight for many is the bell tower tour. A guide explains the tower’s construction and the role of each of the six bells. The views of Barcelona from the top are stunning. The tower stands 54 metres tall.

Allow about forty-five minutes for a visit including the bell tower tour. The standard ticket costs eight euros. Reduced tickets are available for six euros fifty.

The Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi is more than just a building. It is a living testament to Barcelona’s history. It is a place of faith art and community. As you leave take a moment to appreciate the solitary pine tree in the square. Remember the legends and the resilience of this remarkable basilica.
