“A church inside a palace?” you might ask. Yes, you heard right! Here at the Parrocchia del Preziosissimo Sangue di Gesù, we’re standing in a former palace, the Palazzo della Senavra. This building has seen quite a journey, from a countryside residence for Milanese nobility in the 1500s to a spiritual retreat for Jesuits. It even served as a psychiatric hospital and a shelter for the destitute before finding its current purpose as the Parrocchia del Preziosissimo Sangue di Gesù. While the exterior still hints at its baroque past, the interior tells a different story. Step inside, and you’ll find a single, vast nave created by stripping away the palace’s internal floors and walls. Five smooth, concrete arches stretch across the space, supporting a unique double-vaulted ceiling. The church’s modern design is the result of a major renovation completed in December 2019. This renovation saw the installation of a new altar, pulpit, and pews, all crafted with a striking modern aesthetic. You’ll notice the beautiful marble baptismal font, a replacement for its smaller predecessor. The bronze statue of San Giovanni Battista, which once adorned the old font, now graces this new addition.
