Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, a name synonymous with education and progress in Argentina. Here at Parque Sarmiento, named in his honor, we celebrate his legacy. This isn’t just Córdoba’s largest park, it’s a living testament to a vision. Imagine, in 1871, this very ground hosted the First National Industrial Exposition, championed by Sarmiento himself. While the magnificent Exposition Hall, sadly, met its end in a 1965 fire, the spirit of innovation lives on. Parque Sarmiento officially opened in 1911, a sprawling 100-hectare oasis designed by the renowned Carlos Thays. He envisioned a grand park for the burgeoning Nueva Córdoba neighborhood. Thays, who later designed Buenos Aires’ famed Palermo Park, imbued Parque Sarmiento with the elegance of the Belle Époque. This park became a haven for Córdoba’s elite. In 1912, Dr. Juan Ferreyra, captivated by its beauty, purchased adjacent land for his Beaux-Arts mansion. Today, that very mansion houses the Evita Fine Arts Museum, a testament to the park’s enduring allure. Parque Sarmiento is more than just green space. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. Stroll along the Paseo del Bicentenario, where 201 colorful cement rings mark Argentina’s history from 1810 to 2010. The 201st ring, a symbol of the future, invites contemplation. Don’t miss the Faro del Bicentenario, an 80-meter tall beacon, a modern icon rivaling Buenos Aires’ Obelisk. Seek out the Mirador Panorámico El Dante, offering breathtaking views of the city. Nearby, a 19th-century pergola provides another vantage point. Climb the steps of the Paseo del Coniferal, where you can admire the city and the iconic Eiffel Wheel replica. Enjoy a leisurely boat ride on the artificial lake, or simply relax by its shores. The Teatro Griego, an open-air theater, hosts festivals and events, a cultural heart within the park. Parque Sarmiento is a place where history, culture, and nature intertwine. It’s a testament to Sarmiento’s legacy, a place of learning, leisure, and lasting beauty.
