Fifty thousand square meters of green tranquility. That’s Parque de la Vaguada. Nestled in Madrid’s Barrio del Pilar it’s more than just a park.
Parque de la Vaguada is a public park. It sits between major avenues in the Fuencarral-El Pardo district. Before the 1970s this land was quite different. A small stream the Arroyo de la Veguila flowed here. A developer Banús wanted to build a shopping mall. Local residents protested fiercely. They wanted public amenities not just more concrete. The protests were intense sometimes even brutally suppressed.
The fight for Parque de la Vaguada lasted years. It showed the strength of community action. The residents formed an association La Vaguada es Nuestra. Small businesses across Madrid supported their cause. Finally in 1983 a compromise was reached. The shopping mall was built. But so was the park. The park also houses a cultural center a library a municipal pool and a health center. The Teatro de Madrid is unfortunately closed now.
Parque de la Vaguada became a community hub. In 2011 during Spain’s 15M movement it hosted large citizen assemblies. Hundreds gathered here to discuss social change. These assemblies although smaller now still take place. The park is a testament to perseverance and community.
The main pond recently underwent a major renovation. Completed in 2023 it now boasts a new pergola. New trees were planted. The pond edges are now higher providing seating. The park’s beauty is enhanced by its diverse flora. Silver poplars horse chestnuts red plums and pine trees grace its landscape. Roses and shrubs add splashes of color.
Today Parque de la Vaguada is a vibrant green space. It’s a meeting place for families a haven for relaxation and a symbol of community power. It offers playgrounds for children areas for senior citizens and even sports facilities. The annual Barrio del Pilar festival takes place here. So take a moment enjoy the beauty of this park.
