Ever paused to consider how urban spaces intertwine with nature? Here at Parque da Pasteleira, you see a perfect example. It is located in Porto in the parish of Lordelo do Ouro. This park spans an impressive seven hectares. It offers a green retreat within the city.
Parque da Pasteleira came into being between 2004 and 2009. Landscape architect Marisa Lavrador designed it. The park is divided by Afonso de Paiva Street. Three footbridges connect the two sections seamlessly.
Imagine this area before the park. It was a space largely defined by wild pines and cork oaks. These trees are remnants of Porto’s natural vegetation. Now, Parque da Pasteleira has enriched the area. Many indigenous trees and shrubs have been planted. Some exotic species also found their place here.
The creation of Parque da Pasteleira had several key objectives. Improving urban life quality was paramount. Strengthening the community was another goal. It sought to create an urban oasis promoting relaxation. It aimed to boost the local economy and property values too. The park’s ecological value is very important for this urban environment. Green spaces help mitigate air pollution. They also allow plant and animal species to prosper.
Notice the meandering pond. You might spot ducks and Egyptian geese there. A paved cycling path winds through the park. The path allows cyclists to travel from the Parque da Pasteleira to the Parque da Cidade. Look around. You may even find a little sculpture park. Children will love the playgrounds.
Interestingly, some residents weren’t part of the original plan. Chickens and at least one cat have made the park their home.
