Is it just a gentle breeze or do you feel a chill running down your spine? We are standing here at the foot of Parque Artesanal Loma de la Cruz, a place where the echoes of history intertwine with the vibrant pulse of Colombian culture. Founded on July 12, 1990, this park isn’t just a feast for the eyes, it’s a lifeline. Over 120 families depend on the Parque Artesanal Loma de la Cruz for their livelihood, selling their crafts and sharing their traditions. Picture yourself stepping back in time, to the colonial era. Legend has it that this hill, Loma de la Cruz, earned its name from a tragic tale. A love story, forbidden and passionate, unfolded between two slaves, Crescencio and Juana. Imagine their clandestine marriage at the altar of Piedra Grande in Valle del Lili, a secret shared with their mistress Doña Carmen de la Ronda. However, their joy was short-lived. Doña Carmen betrayed their trust, revealing their secret to their Spanish master. A chase ensued, ending in a brutal capture. Juana, beaten mercilessly. Crescencio, fueled by love and rage, struck back at their master, only to be punished further. His hand, severed, a constant reminder of his defiance. As darkness fell upon the Loma, travelers passing through would whisper of a restless soul, a haunting presence. Some say it was Crescencio’s spirit, forever searching for his beloved Juana. To appease the restless spirit, a humble wooden cross was erected, replaced in 1909 by a sturdier brick one by Franciscan monks. This very cross, standing sentinel atop the hill, lends its name to this vibrant park. Today, Parque Artesanal Loma de la Cruz is a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds. Over 60 stalls showcase the rich artistry of Latin America, a vibrant tapestry woven from ceramics, wood carvings, and traditional trinkets. As you explore this cultural haven, perhaps you’ll feel a brush of wind against your skin, a whisper on the breeze. A reminder of Crescencio and Juana, their love story forever woven into the fabric of Parque Artesanal Loma de la Cruz.
