“Another church?” you might ask. Not just another church. Paróquia Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora has a unique story. This church stands as a testament to faith. It also reflects the changing face of the Bom Retiro neighborhood.
Let’s step back to 1914. Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva, the Archbishop of São Paulo, entrusted the Salesian Congregation with a new parish. This parish became known as Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora. The neighboring Instituto Dom Bosco soon followed.
Initially, Paróquia Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora lacked a proper home. Baptisms and weddings occurred at the Santuário do Sagrado Coração de Jesus. This arrangement lasted until May 26, 1918. That day marked the inauguration of a humble chapel. Believe it or not, this chapel was once a bottle deposit. This makeshift space stood where the Santuário de Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora stands today.
Padre Domingos Minguzzi, the first vicar, tirelessly served his extensive parish. He visited the sick and dedicated himself to his community. The Salesians envisioned a school alongside the church. Padre Pedro Rota advocated for a vocational school to benefit the working-class youth of Bom Retiro.
Finding suitable land proved challenging. Padre Minguzzi’s persistence paid off. The Salesian Congregation acquired land at Rua Afonso Pena and Rua Três Rios. The city generously donated land adjacent to Praça Visconde de Congonhas do Campo. Today, it’s known as Praça Cel. Fernando Prestes.
The church and school became intertwined. This collaboration marked the second Salesian foundation in São Paulo. The first was the Liceu Coração de Jesus, established in 1885. The construction of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora began in 1923. A decade later, with the roof completed, it opened for worship. The Bom Retiro neighborhood was largely Italian at the time.
However, the parish’s vibrant religious life faced challenges. The parish was divided into smaller communities. Many residents moved away. A growing Jewish population transformed the area into a textile center. This shift reduced the Catholic population.
Today, the neighborhood reflects a diverse tapestry of cultures. Korean and Bolivian communities have joined the mix. This blend creates a unique environment. Paróquia Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora became a place for ecumenical action.
Despite these changes, devotion to Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora endures. The parish welcomes people from diverse backgrounds. The church offers masses in Portuguese, Spanish and Polish. This caters to the varied languages of its parishioners.
