Has anyone ever told you about the Salesian fathers and their dream of a thriving parish in Gahanga? Paroisse Saint Joseph Gahanga wasn’t built overnight. It started as a vision back in 1959 when the Salesian fathers laid the foundation, not just for a church, but for an entire community. They began by establishing Groupe Scolaire Gahanga, a school that would nurture young minds and sow the seeds of faith. Word of God and teachings began echoing through the classrooms in 1965. The dream continued to grow. In 1968, the construction of the church building began. It finally reached completion in 1971. Paroisse Saint Joseph Gahanga was officially consecrated on March 1, 1971, by Bishop AndrĂ© Perrodin. The driving force behind this project was a dedicated Salesian priest, Father Joseph Fonk. He tirelessly labored, envisioning this place as more than just a church, but as a vibrant parish. His devotion and hard work led to the parish being named after Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers. Paroisse Saint Joseph Gahanga was officially established as a parish on October 9, 2021, by Cardinal Antoine Kambanda, the Archbishop of Kigali. It became the 34th parish within the Archdiocese of Kigali. Originally, it encompassed two central communities: Gahanga, with 16 zones, and Karembure, with 3. The plan is for Paroisse Saint Joseph Gahanga to expand further. It will eventually incorporate Nunga and Murinja, bringing the church closer to the growing community. The parish boundaries currently include the entire Gahanga sector, part of the Gatenga sector, and a section of the Kagarama sector. The church borders several other parishes, including Gikondo, Nyamirambo, Kicukiro, Rushubi, Nyamata, and Butamwa. In 2019, a census revealed that the parish serves approximately 10,000 parishioners. This thriving community includes five religious organizations. There are also two Catholic schools: GS Gahanga and GS Karembure, continuing the Salesian fathers’ initial vision of education and faith. Paroisse Saint Joseph Gahanga is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith, hard work, and the vision of one dedicated priest. It stands as a beacon of hope and a center of community in the ever-growing city of Kigali.
