“Where the land meets the sky” that’s how locals describe this sacred ground. This is Paroasy Md Lazarosy Ambohijanaka a place where faith finds its home. But let’s journey back to understand its roots.
Ambohijanaka the suburb where we stand boasts a rich history. It is a rural commune in the Analamanga Region. This region is nestled within the Central Highlands of Madagascar. The village of Ambohijanaka was formerly known as Ambohitrandriamanitra. This fortified village dates back to the 17th century. It retains its stone gates and traditional houses.
Here in Ambohijanaka Andriamasinavalona was born. He ruled Antananarivo from 1675 to 1710. The village’s center houses the Ambohijanaka town hall. You will also find the tomb of Andriamandroso here.
About 15 km from the capital lies Ambohijanaka gara a commune rich in history. Ambohitrandriamanitra the Rova of Ambohijanaka and the tombs of Rafohy and Rangita are all located here. Even the name Ambohijanaka has its own story. Legend says that Andrianavalonarivo resided in Ambohitrandriamanitra. He fathered Andrianavalomanitsadahy and Andriandahimbolamena. Fearing his sons might not respect local taboos he relocated them. This gave rise to the name “vohitry ny zanaka” meaning the village of the children which later became Ambohijanaka.
Ambohijanaka can be accessed via National Road 7 and National Road 2 from Antananarivo. The Nanganoana Lake and Varahana River also grace this municipality.
But let’s talk about the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga. It is near Antananarivo and symbolizes royal power and sacred significance. King Andrianampoinimerina founded Ambohimanga. He envisioned a unified kingdom. He chose this hilltop for its strategic advantages and stunning views. From 1787 to 1810 he ruled.
Ambohimanga became the spiritual and political center of the kingdom. It played a vital role in Madagascar’s unification and expansion. It served as a stronghold a place of worship and a royal residence.
In 2001 Ambohimanga became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ensured its preservation for future generations. The hill features impressive stone structures including royal palaces and tombs.
The Rova at Ambohimanga showcases the Merina people’s architectural prowess. The walls used a cement of sand shells and 16 million egg whites. Inside the Rova are two palaces. The Traditional Palace was built in 1788. The Summer Palace was built in a French-European style for Queen Ranavalona I.
Traditional Malagasy rituals and ceremonies are still visible at Ambohimanga. You may witness ancestral hymns or zebu sacrifices. Remember not to disturb these sacred spots. Do not point at them with outstretched fingers.
