Amidst the bustling city of Boston, a beacon of faith stands tall. Parkway United Methodist Church, a testament to the enduring power of community and devotion, has a captivating history. It all began in 1844, not within grand halls, but in the humble parlor of George Black in Mattapan. He invited his neighbors for hymn singing, a simple act that sparked the church’s existence. At that time, Mattapan lacked churches, serving primarily as grazing land for Dorchester cattle. This small gathering evolved into a non-denominational society, sustained by visiting pastors from neighboring towns like Hyde Park, Milton, and Dorchester. Parkway United Methodist Church’s journey took a significant turn in 1872 when the society was entrusted to the Boston City Missionary Society of the Methodist Church. The congregation found its first dedicated home in 1881 in a repurposed Episcopalian church building on Babson Street. They worshipped there until 1924. Then, they voted to relocate to Milton, acquiring land for both a church and a community house. The community house was built in 1926. The initial church structure was completed in 1929. Finally, the present sanctuary, a place of beauty and reverence, was finished and consecrated in 1940 by Bishop G Bromley Oxnam. Parkway United Methodist Church stands as a symbol of resilience and community, a place where the echoes of hymns sung in a humble parlor still resonate today.
