Did you know that Parkway Playground in New York City was once part of a massive ash dump? It’s hard to believe, looking at this vibrant playground today, filled with the joyous sounds of children. Parkway Playground’s history is intertwined with the larger story of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. In the early 20th century, this area was a marshland, later transformed into a dumping ground for ashes and refuse. For nearly 30 years, an estimated 50 million cubic yards of waste were deposited here, creating mounds that rose as high as 90 feet. Imagine the stench and the swarms of rats. This was no place for children. Then came Robert Moses, the “master builder” of New York City. He envisioned a grand park in this unlikely location, a green oasis for the burgeoning population of Queens. The 1939 World’s Fair provided the catalyst for this transformation. Workers leveled the ash mountains, carving out the land for Meadow and Willow Lakes, and the very ground beneath Parkway Playground. The leftover ash? It wasn’t wasted. Moses ingeniously incorporated it into the bases of the surrounding highways, the very roads that some of you may have taken to get here today. The park was further developed for the 1964 World’s Fair, adding iconic structures like the Unisphere. However, following the fair, the park fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that significant renovations breathed new life into Parkway Playground and Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Today, Parkway Playground stands as a testament to the power of vision and transformation. From a desolate ash dump to a vibrant hub of play, it reflects the ever-evolving landscape of New York City. So, the next time you’re here, pushing your child on the swing or watching them climb the jungle gym, remember the surprising history beneath your feet. It’s a story of how even the most unlikely places can be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful.
