Cottage flats. That’s what defines Parkhouse. Parkhouse in Glasgow. A neighbourhood built in the early 1930s. Before that it was just open farmland. Imagine the transformation.

Parkhouse sits nestled between larger suburbs. Milton to the north. Possilpark to the south. Lambhill and Ruchill lie to the west. To the east railway lines separate it from Springburn. The boundaries aren’t precise. It’s a rectangular area really. A residential area mostly.

Parkhouse boasts a history beyond its charming cottage flats. A primary school. Greenview School. It was once a special education facility. Sadly an arson attack damaged it in 2017. It’s now being converted into flats. Then there was High Possil Senior Secondary School. It faced demolition due to structural problems. Modern apartments now stand where it once did. Only the old gymnasium remains. A listed building. It sits sadly dilapidated on Balmore Road.

A church stands opposite the only multi-storey building in Parkhouse. An eight-story block. A Londis shop on Ashfield Street provides shopping. More amenities exist in Milton and Possilpark. But those areas have seen drug-related crime. Sadly Parkhouse has also experienced such incidents.

West of Balmore Road lies a small industrial estate. It was once Scottish Water’s regional control centre. Now it’s quiet. The disused buildings of Possil railway station sit nearby. This area roughly marks the site of the old Parkhouse farm. That’s where the area got its name.

A railway cutting bisects Parkhouse. The tracks of the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway once ran there. The Hamiltonhill Branch also crossed Parkhouse. It went towards a goods yard by the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Transport in Parkhouse is modern. Two railway stations serve the area. Possilpark & Parkhouse to the west. Ashfield to the east. First Glasgow operates frequent bus services. The 7A runs along Balmore Road. The 75 travels along Ashfield Street. Parkhouse. A blend of history and modern life. A place with a story to tell.
