That angel atop Parkhead Library’s dome watches over us doesn’t it? Parkhead Library a grand Carnegie-funded building stands proudly. It opened in 1906 a testament to Andrew Carnegie’s generosity. This magnificent structure designed by J R Rhind is a true treasure. Its two stories are filled with history. The library was a bustling hub a vital part of the Parkhead community.
Imagine the excitement on that opening day in 1906. Councilor James Shaw Maxwell officially opened its doors. He was a champion of free libraries making knowledge accessible to all. The library’s collection initially housed approximately 9588 volumes. Separate reading rooms catered to men women boys and girls. Even a special Children’s Entrance existed. There were 70 seats in the General Reading Room 32 in the Ladies Reading Room. There were also 78 seats in the Boys’ Reading Room and 56 in the Girls’ Reading Room. A total of 304 seats.
Think of the countless stories whispered within its walls. Parkhead Library served as more than just a repository of books. It was a community center. It held ESOL classes. It hosted Clyde Gateway’s food and fun sessions. It even offered adult literacy and numeracy classes. The library housed a Macmillan information and drop-in service. It also provided a Universal Credit support hub.
Sadly Parkhead Library’s days in its original location are numbered. It’s now slated for relocation. The city council approved funding to move it to the new Parkhead Hub. This new hub offers a one-stop shop for various services. It will combine council services Glasgow Life initiatives and HSCP services all under one roof. This move presents both a challenge and an opportunity. While it marks the end of an era it allows for the regeneration of Parkhead Cross. The building will soon be vacant offering exciting possibilities for its future.
But the spirit of Parkhead Library endures. Its legacy of providing access to information and fostering community will live on. It will move to a new home bringing with it its rich history and unwavering commitment to its community. The angel on the dome will continue to watch over us guiding the next chapter of this iconic institution.
