Why did the Heers Brothers donate that plot of land? That’s the question that hangs in the air here at Parkdale Pool. This place, this Parkdale Pool, has been a community hub for over six decades. Its roots go deep, even before Clark County’s parks and recreation program existed. Initially, this area was home to a playground, two pools, a wading pool, and an office building serving Parkdale Homes. The Heers Brothers Construction, the builders of Parkdale Homes, donated this land. Then, in 1964, Clark County Parks and Recreation took ownership. Parkdale and Paradise parks were among their first acquisitions. The original office building was on this 3-acre plot. It was later moved to Horseman’s Park in 1978. The Parkdale Recreation Center opened its doors in 1980. The pool bath house got a makeover in 1988. A senior center joined the scene in 2000. And in 2002, the water park splashed onto the scene. More recently, the old 1980s structure was demolished, paving the way for the spacious facility you see today, more than double the original size. Some remnants of the past live on. Recycled wooden beams and décor from the old building have been incorporated into the new design. The new Parkdale Recreation Center is a modern marvel, showcasing precast concrete elements and sustainable materials. Its construction was made possible by $5.7 million in federal Community Development Block Grant funds, earmarked for areas facing economic challenges. This isn’t just a bigger building. It’s a testament to community growth and enhanced opportunities. This new facility offers a gymnasium for indoor sports, a stage that magically rolls out from the wall, a fitness room equipped for seniors and beginners, and a game room complete with pool, table tennis, and foosball. Multipurpose rooms with roll-up walls expand onto a patio and are available for rent. From dodgeball and piano lessons to badminton, yoga, quilting, and even a Wii bowling league, Parkdale Pool and the recreation center buzz with activity. They’ve truly built something special here.
