Washer and dryers and 700 dollars. That is how it all began here at Park Place United Methodist Church. Let me tell you the story of how this church became a beacon of hope in Southeast Houston.
Park Place United Methodist Church stands as a testament to community spirit. It shows dedication to serving those in need. Its story began with a simple yet profound observation. Local pastors noticed an increasing number of homeless individuals in the area. They discovered the number one need of these displaced people was to be clean. This came before food or clothing.
Driven by this revelation, pastors and parishioners from three churches united. These churches were Park Place United Methodist Church now Servants of Christ United Methodist Parish, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Glenbrook United Methodist Church. They envisioned a safe haven. This is a place where the displaced could find not just basic necessities, but also renewed dignity.
On October 30, 2001, Park Place United Methodist Church opened its doors. It had a small group of volunteers. There were donated washers and dryers. And there was a starting fund of just 700 dollars. That first day, they served eight individuals.
The church quickly became more than just a place for laundry. It evolved into a comprehensive support system. This offered lunch, showers, and clean clothes. The mission expanded to address the broader needs of the community’s vulnerable members.
Today, Crossroads at Park Place operates out of St. Paul’s/San Pablo’s Episcopal Church. It is located at 7843 Park Place Blvd. They are open every Tuesday and Thursday. The opening hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. They serve an average of 400 individuals each week. These individuals are homeless or living in poverty.
The services have grown. They now include assistance in finding housing, employment, counseling, and healthcare. This remarkable volunteer organization continues to uphold its mission. It promotes health, hygiene, and dignity for those experiencing homelessness and poverty in Southeast Houston.
Park Place United Methodist Church’s legacy lives on through Crossroads. It reminds us that even the simplest acts of kindness can create profound change. It shows the power of community.
