Park of Edgewater isn’t just a neighborhood it’s a story etched in time. It started as Edgewater Camp a place where young people from St Ann’s Episcopal Church spent their summers. Over time these simple campsites transformed into cozy bungalows. After World War I the community was divided into sections A B and C mirroring the structure of army camps. Sections D and E followed later.
By 1954 the camp had evolved into a thriving community of full-time residents. It was then that it received its current name Park of Edgewater. It became a cooperative in 1988 solidifying its unique status as one of the few private cooperative communities in all of New York City. This 55-acre haven is home to approximately 3000 residents living across 675 single-family homes.
But Park of Edgewater’s history isn’t without its challenges. Located on the Long Island Sound it faces significant flood risks. Many homes were built before modern flood-resistant construction codes were implemented. The Department of City Planning has been working with the community to implement resiliency measures. This is vital given that around 40% of the homes lie within the 1% annual chance floodplain. This percentage is projected to rise to 75% by the 2050s.
Despite these challenges Park of Edgewater has a vibrant community spirit. There is the Edgewater Park Volunteer Fire Department one of only nine in New York City. They hold an annual Memorial Day parade a true testament to their commitment. There’s also the famous Ragamuffin Parade marking the start of the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. The Labor Day Olympics a century-old tradition showcases the residents’ enduring spirit.
