Did you know Ampang Park Shopping Centre was Malaysia’s first ever mall? It opened its doors in 1973. Located in Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle near Suria KLCC it was a truly groundbreaking development. The Low Keng Huat Brothers Realty built it after the success of Singapore’s People’s Park Complex. Ampang Park wasn’t just a place to shop. It was a one-stop center for everything. From fashion and food to banking and currency exchange you could find it all there. Jalan Ampang was known for upscale residences making it the perfect location for such a sophisticated mall. The mall quickly became an iconic landmark even featuring in the popular reality series The Amazing Race in 2002. Contestants struggled to find it though highlighting its somewhat hidden location. For 44 years Ampang Park thrived. It was a beloved part of Kuala Lumpur. Unfortunately bigger more luxurious malls emerged. Sadly in 2015 plans were announced to demolish Ampang Park to build the Ampang Park MRT station. A “Save Ampang Park” campaign tried to stop the demolition. Sadly the campaign failed. The mall permanently closed on December 31 2017. Demolition began in May 2018. While the MRT station now stands where the mall once was its memory lives on. Many people remember Ampang Park fondly. It remains a symbol of Malaysia’s retail history. The first shopping mall in Malaysia. A place that held so many memories for so many people.
