Is this where faith finds its voice in the heart of Brisbane? Look at this beautiful Park Church Tongan Congregation. This isn’t just any church. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of Tongan heritage and Christian faith. The Park Church Tongan Congregation, you see, blossomed in 1976. It was nurtured by individuals like Kepu Malafu and a group of passionate Tongan rugby union players. They dreamt of a spiritual home, a place where their culture could intertwine with their beliefs. In the beginning, they were guided by Reverend Sione Kiteau Saafi, a minister from the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. He helped lay the foundation for what would become a beacon of faith for the Tongan community in Brisbane. But the Park Church Tongan Congregation’s story doesn’t end there. In 1983, a significant milestone was reached. This congregation formally joined the Uniting Church in Australia becoming a part of the Southside Innercity Parish. Years later, in a beautiful display of cultural fusion, the church received a gift of greenery. Thanks to the Brisbane Tongan Community’s Green Project, the grounds were adorned with plants native to Tonga. This act brought a piece of their homeland to their adopted city, creating a tangible link between their past and present. Today, the Park Church Tongan Congregation stands as a testament to the power of faith and community. It’s a vibrant hub where Tongan Australians gather to worship, celebrate, and draw strength from their shared heritage. So, as you stand before this unassuming yet significant building, remember this. Within these walls, echoes the spirit of Tonga. It’s a spirit of resilience, faith, and unwavering community, a spirit that continues to thrive in the heart of Brisbane.
