The Park Avenue Christian Church wasn’t always located at this prestigious address. It began in 1810 as a small congregation of nine members breaking away from the Ebenezer Baptist Church. They sought a simpler understanding of Christianity as described in the New Testament. This was part of a larger movement that eventually formed the Disciples of Christ denomination.
This wasn’t just any church. The Park Avenue Christian Church is deeply rooted in the fight for social justice. From early involvement in the abolitionist movement the church has championed equality and inclusion. Today its commitment to diversity is reflected in its inclusive message and the choice of its first female and first Black senior pastor Reverend Kaji DouĊĦa.
The building itself is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture. Designed by Cram Goodhue & Ferguson the architects were inspired by La Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Its slender 70-foot spire is a beautiful feature. The stunning stained-glass windows are a remarkable sight. Some were designed by the renowned Louis Comfort Tiffany. Others are the work of his talented employee Mary Elizabeth Tillinghast.
The church’s history is rich with changes. It started as the South Dutch Reformed Church. It then became the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church after a merger. Later around 1940 to 1945 it briefly housed the Betina Evangelical Church. Finally in 1945 the Central Christian Church purchased the building. It was then renamed the Park Avenue Christian Church.
In more recent times the church faced a difficult decision. A controversial plan was proposed to demolish an annex and build a luxury residential tower. The sale of the annex land and air rights provided much-needed funds for the church. This allowed for vital renovations and ensured the church’s future.
