Picture the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, its grand buildings stretching along the Salzach River, a testament to centuries of knowledge and learning. The university is named after Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron, who founded it in 1622. Its history is a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of scholarship, faith, and political upheaval. The university’s early years were a time of growth, nurtured by the Benedictine abbeys of Salzburg. Theology, divinity, law, medicine, and philosophy were the first subjects offered, and a young Albert Keuslin, a graduate of the Jesuit University of Dillingen, was appointed the first rector.

Though Salzburg was swept up in the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War, the university flourished under the patronage of the Benedictine orders. It was a time when knowledge was cherished and learning was viewed as a sacred pursuit. But the university fell victim to the Napoleonic Wars in 1810 during the secularization of the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg, and its doors were closed. Thankfully, the university was re-established in 1962, and now it blossoms once again, a thriving university with 18,000 students from all corners of the world.

The university’s presence is felt throughout the city of Salzburg with facilities in the city centre, the Unipark Nonntal campus, Itzling, Rif, and even in Linz, Krems, and Vienna. You can feel the university’s distinct energy in the city, a vibrant backdrop to the world-famous Salzburg Festival.

Inside the university, the halls and classrooms whisper with the echoes of countless years of discussions, lectures, and debates. And today, new lessons are learned, and new discoveries are made. The Paris Lodron University of Salzburg is a living institution, a beacon of knowledge shining brightly in the heart of Salzburg.
