Is it really just a park? Parco Sottocasa whispers tales of noble families. It also tells of industrial pioneers and artistic transformations. We are standing before a green expanse now. It was once the heart of high society.
Parco Sottocasa began as part of a grand estate. The villa Sottocasa watches over it. The Sottocasa family gave the park its name. Before them, the influential Visconti family owned it. They shaped the landscape into what we see today.
In the 19th century, the park transformed into an English garden. It became a romantic landscape. Architects added a neogothic tower. Also, they constructed a Kafehaus. This circular building offered stunning views. Imagine ladies and gentlemen strolling here. They enjoyed leisurely afternoons in this very spot.
Luigi Ponti acquired the villa in 1865. He married Elisabetta Sottocasa. The Ponti family modernized the estate. They added stables and a covered riding arena. These additions reflected their status. They were part of a major industrial dynasty.
Look around you. Can you picture the covered riding arena? It had a neogothic facade. The adjacent neoclassical limonaia faces the park. It is a testament to the family’s refined taste.
The park’s ownership changed hands over time. In the 1960s, the Municipality of Vimercate started acquiring parts of it. Their goal was to increase the area of Parco Trotti. In the early 1980s, the municipality acquired about half of Parco Sottocasa. They opened it to the public after maintenance.
In 2001, the municipality acquired the villa’s south wing. They also got the central body and the remaining parkland. This acquisition was the start of a restoration project. The project aimed to revive the entire Villa Sottocasa complex.
Today, Parco Sottocasa is a public space. People come to relax and enjoy nature. It is a place where history and recreation meet. The park offers a glimpse into Vimercate’s past. It connects us to the families who once lived here.
As you wander through Parco Sottocasa take a moment. Consider the layers of history beneath your feet. Envision the elegant gatherings. Reflect on the industrial innovations. The park stands as a testament to time. It is a reminder of the enduring beauty of landscape.
