Have you ever wondered what life was like in Milan centuries ago? Imagine a time when the Naviglio Grande canal was a vital artery for commerce, its waters bustling with barges, and the air thick with the cries of merchants and the rhythmic clang of hammers. Today, you stand in Parco delle Lavandaie, a hidden gem nestled along the banks of this historic waterway.

Parco delle Lavandaie, meaning “Park of the Washermen”, gets its name from a fascinating historical secret hidden within its green embrace. In the 18th century, before the days of washing machines, this area was home to a bustling laundromat. Men, organized into a brotherhood known as the “Confraternita dei Lavandai”, washed clothes for the affluent families of Milan. This unique system allowed the wealthy to send their soiled linens to the laundromat on a regular basis. The washermen would collect the garments in baskets, carry them to the Parco delle Lavandaie, and wash them with the simplest, yet most effective, tools available.

The men would kneel on wooden platforms, known as “brellin”, that lined the banks of the canal, their backs bent over the stone tubs. They scrubbed the garments vigorously, using a special mixture for cleaning, “palton”, which was a blend of ashes, soap, and baking soda. These men kept the clothes clean and the city’s elite looking pristine. Their lives were a rhythmic cycle of labor and the comforting sounds of the Naviglio water lapping at the banks. While some might see Parco delle Lavandaie as a simple park today, it represents a rich, forgotten history – a testament to a bygone era when hard work and dedication created a very unique service for the city’s people.
