Parco dei Mulini spans across several municipalities. Legnano Canegrate San Vittore Olona Parabiago and Nerviano all share this beautiful space. Once, the Olona River powered a multitude of mills. They were the lifeblood of this industrious area.
Imagine the rhythmic sound of water driving millstones. Generations of millers worked tirelessly. They ground grain and sustained communities. The earliest records of mills along the Olona date back to 1043. By 1608 a survey counted 116 mills along the river’s course.
The industrial revolution transformed these mills. They became sources of power for factories. Later electric motors replaced water power. Many mills fell into disuse and were sadly demolished.
Yet some mills survived. They stand today as silent witnesses to a bygone era. The Meraviglia Mill is the oldest. It dates back to the 14th century. Uniquely it still functions as a mill grinding animal feed.
The Star Qua Mill has its own story. In 1853 Hapsburg soldiers ordered the miller to vacate. The miller defiantly replied We want to stay here. His words gave the mill its memorable name.
