Ten hectares of beauty. That’s Parc Valrose. A haven of learning and history. Nestled in the heart of Nice this isn’t just any park. It’s a living testament to Nice’s rich academic past.

Imagine a time before the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis. Before the Faculty of Sciences. Before even the present Universite Cote d’Azur. Parc Valrose was once the private domain of Baron Von Derwies a Russian railway magnate. He commissioned the construction of the Chateau de Valrose between 1867 and 1870. Eight hundred workers toiled under four architects to build this magnificent structure. A Nice gardener Joseph Carles designed its ten hectares of stunning gardens.

The site’s academic journey began much earlier. Its roots stretch back to the 17th century. The Collegium jurisconsultorum niciensium was established in 1639 by the Princes of Savoie. This prestigious institution boasted renowned jurists. Their influence lasted until Nice’s annexation by France in 1860. A school of medicine thrived here also in the 17th century its teachings admired across Europe.

The modern university’s story begins in earnest in the early 20th century. Doyen Louis Trotabas and Maurice Mignon spearheaded its creation. With local support especially from the city of Nice they founded the Mediterranean University Center in 1933. Paul Valery was its first administrator. Institutes of legal literary and scientific studies followed in 1938 1941 and 1945 respectively.

A decree in 1962 created the Faculty of Law and Economics. This was attached to the University of Aix-Marseille. The University of Nice was officially established by decree on October 23 1965. Its seat was established in the Chateau de Valrose. The ten-hectare park was dedicated as the campus for the Faculty of Sciences.

In 1989 the University of Nice adopted the name Sophia-Antipolis. This reflected its contribution to the technology park. In 2015 Universite Cote d’Azur emerged as a research-oriented community of universities and institutions. The decree of July 25 2019 updated in July 16 2024 officially created Universite Cote d’Azur. Parc Valrose remains one of its jewels.

Today Parc Valrose is a thriving university campus. It’s a breathtaking blend of history nature and modern academia. A place where the past informs the future. The legacy of Baron Von Derwies and the centuries of learning that preceded him lives on. It’s a place of beauty a place of knowledge a place of history. A true treasure in the heart of Nice.
