A grey granite stele stands tall in Parc Nicolas-Viel. It silently tells a story of faith and tragedy. This small public park in Ahuntsic Montreal holds a significant place in Canadian history. It commemorates Father Nicolas Viel a Recollect priest and missionary.

Father Viel arrived in Quebec in 1623. He journeyed to Huron territory. There he spent two years learning the Huron language. He added to Father Le Caron’s dictionary. In 1625 Father Viel decided to return to Quebec. He was accompanied by a young Huron man named Ahuntsic. Their canoe capsized in the rapids of the Rivière des Prairies. Both Father Viel and Ahuntsic tragically drowned.

The exact date of Father Viel’s birth is unknown. However his companion Gabriel Sagard described him as an old preacher in 1632. Some accounts from the 17th century suggested foul play. They hinted at murder by Indigenous peoples. However recent research shows this was a legend. It was likely started by an Algonquin chief to discourage travel to the Huron region. Father Viel’s death was likely accidental.

A plaque on the stele in Parc Nicolas-Viel speaks of the first mass in the Montreal region. It was celebrated on June 24 1615 by Recollects Denis Jamet and Joseph Le Caron. The other side remembers Father Viel’s tragic death. The park itself is a peaceful place. It offers a quiet reflection on a pivotal moment in Montreal’s past. It is a touching tribute to a missionary who gave his life while serving his faith. The stele with its inscriptions serves as a poignant reminder. It reminds us of the risks taken by early missionaries. It tells the story of the brave man and the tragic accident. It is a must-see for anyone interested in Montreal’s rich history.
