Parc du Scheutbos – Scheutbospark

This 50-hectare park in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, Brussels, holds centuries of history within its leafy embrace. Imagine Parc du Scheutbos – Scheutbospark in the 8th century, a dense “steenkoolbos” or charcoal forest. Over the next 400 years, much of it was cleared for farmland. By the mid-18th century, the area was a mix of woods, farmland, and wetlands, with the Molenbeek and Leibeek streams winding through it. Parc du Scheutbos – Scheutbospark owes its survival to the foresight of the Molenbeek municipality. They entrusted its management to Leefmilieu Brussel, saving it from being swallowed by urban development. Today, Parc du Scheutbos – Scheutbospark provides a haven for both wildlife and city dwellers. It’s home to thrushes, blackbirds, wood pigeons, crows, woodpeckers, goldcrests, foxes, and wood mice. The park’s flora includes orchids and pollarded willows. These willows are a defining feature of the landscape and have been preserved for their character. In 2013, a systematic count found a staggering 2119 different plant and animal species within Parc du Scheutbos – Scheutbospark. This biodiversity speaks to the park’s dedication to its ecological role. While informal vegetable gardens once dotted the area, the park now balances its social and ecological functions in a more structured way, allowing the gardens to coexist with the restored Leibeek stream.
