Whispers of history linger in the air. This is Parc du Bois in Potsdam. Before you stands a residential area. But its story is far from ordinary.

Once upon a time this very spot housed a bustling garrison hospital. Imagine the scene. Built between 1890 and 1894 it was a state-of-the-art facility. It served the Uhlan cavalry. This impressive complex consisted of twelve buildings. It adhered to the most modern hygienic standards of the time. The hospital could accommodate up to 309 patients.

The architecture is captivating. Think of the North German brick Gothic style. Segmental arched windows decorate the facade. Colorful glazed brick ornaments add a unique touch. The three-part facade design is truly remarkable. It includes rustication a main floor and an attic.

After the Second World War the Soviet army took over. The hospital fell into disuse. The complex underwent extensive renovations. It was transformed into the residential area we see today.

The name Parc du Bois is fitting. It means Park of Trees in French. It reflects the area’s over one hundred year old trees. The transformation began in 2005 and was completed around 2008. Now 166 residential units thrive here. They stand as a testament to the successful repurposing of a historical landmark. This is more than just housing. Parc du Bois is living history. It whispers tales of military service and architectural prowess. It echoes the lives touched within its walls. It symbolizes the enduring spirit of Potsdam. Take a moment to appreciate this unique blend of the past and the present.
