What if a park could whisper secrets of a buried canal? Parc Barbieux in Roubaix does just that. Parc Barbieux is a beautiful urban park. It’s known as one of France’s finest. It spans 34 hectares, filled with lush greenery and tranquil ponds. Originally, this land wasn’t meant for leisurely strolls. In the 19th century, plans were drawn to build a canal. It would connect Roubaix to the Marque. The canal project involved an ambitious underground passage at Croix Mountain. However, technical difficulties in 1831 halted the project. This left the valley at Barbieux abandoned and unused. Henri-Léon Lisot envisioned a different future for the site. In 1859, he proposed transforming the uneven terrain into an urban park. Inspired by the landscape designer Barillet-Deschamps, Roubaix embraced the idea. The park’s construction began in 1879 and officially ended in 1905. Parc Barbieux became a haven of winding paths, streams, and waterfalls. The park is more than just a green space. It houses over 60 tree species, attracting diverse wildlife. Children’s playgrounds, pétanque courts, and a mini-golf course provide entertainment. Visitors can rent pedalos and rowboats. A restaurant, bar, and refreshment stands offer options for relaxation and socializing. Parc Barbieux also holds historical significance. In 1911, it hosted the International Exposition of Northern France. An interesting fact is that part of Parc Barbieux initially belonged to the town of Croix. However, in 1919, this section was ceded to Roubaix. This division effectively split Croix into two parts. Parc Barbieux, affectionately nicknamed “Le Beau Jardin” (The Beautiful Garden) by locals, holds a “Jardin Remarquable” label. This designation recognizes its exceptional beauty and botanical richness. Parc Barbieux remains a cherished destination. It embodies a transformed vision. A failed canal project became a vibrant park. It stands as a testament to Roubaix’s resilience and appreciation for nature.
