Originally known as Crestmount, the Paramour Estate is a historic residence. It sits in the Moreno Highlands neighborhood of Silver Lake, Los Angeles. In 1988, it was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
Designed by architect Robert D. Farquhar, the 22000-square-foot Mediterranean Revival mansion was built in 1923. It was commissioned by Daisy Canfield Moreno and her husband Antonio Moreno. Daisy was an oil heiress. Antonio was a silent film star. The Paramour Estate became famous for its lavish Sunday afternoon parties. High society members and silent screen stars attended these parties.
But tragedy struck in 1933. Daisy Canfield died in a car crash. Her chauffeur-driven car plunged off Mulholland Drive. Since then, the Paramour Estate has had many lives. It was once the Chloe P. Canfield School for Girls. Later, it became a convent for Franciscan nuns. In the 1970s, the nuns ran a home for girls here.
In 1998, the Paramour Estate appeared as Hillcrest Academy in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. That same year, Dana Hollister bought the property. She renamed it The Paramour Estate. The finale of Scream 3 was filmed here in 1999.
Musicians too have been drawn to the Paramour’s mysterious charm. In 1999, Shivaree recorded their song “Goodnight Moon” in the drained pool. Throughout the early 2000s and 2010s, reality television series used the property. These included From G’s to Gents and Rock of Love: Charm School.
Britney Spears filmed the music video for her cover of “My Prerogative” at the Paramour Mansion in 2004. In 2006, My Chemical Romance lived here. They wrote and recorded demos for their album, The Black Parade. Vocalist Gerard Way claimed to have night terrors. He recorded his experiences and used them in the track “Sleep.” The band believed the mansion was haunted.
Sofia Carson’s music video for “Glowin’ Up” was filmed here. It featured in the 2021 Netflix film, My Little Pony: A New Generation. The Paramour Estate isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a cultural landmark with a rich history and many stories.
