Imagine a time before cars filled the streets. Picture Kaiser Wilhelm I. He surveys his troops from this very spot the Paradestein am Kronsberg. This unassuming obelisk a simple stone monument holds a significant place in Hanover’s history. It marks the site of four grand imperial parades between 1874 and 1907. These weren’t just casual military exercises. They were spectacular displays of power and prestige. The Paradestein commemorates these events near the northern viewpoint on Wasseler Strasse. It’s been standing here proudly since September 1889 thanks to the local patriots who erected it.

Interestingly these patriots chose to remain anonymous. Their names are not recorded on the obelisk. They only identified themselves as ‘Patriots from the surrounding area’. The inscriptions themselves are quite detailed. They document the dates of the three main parades under Kaiser Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II. One inscription however was clearly added later. It references the fourth and final parade. It is dated August 27 1907. The inscription recalls the grand parade of the Xth Army Corps and Cavalry Division before His Majesty Kaiser Wilhelm II.

These parades involved the 10th Army Corps. They were part of the Kaisermanöver the largest and most comprehensive military maneuvers of the German Empire. These yearly exercises were a common occurrence in other European countries at the time. The Paradestein stands as a silent witness to a bygone era. It is a reminder of the power and grandeur of the German Empire. It is also a symbol of the collective memory of the people who lived through this era. The local patriots’ act of remembrance has ensured this part of Hanover’s history is not forgotten. The simple obelisk surrounded by a green hedge stands as a poignant reminder of a time when emperors surveyed their troops from this vantage point. Look closely at the inscriptions. They are a window into a past era. They evoke a sense of the military might and national pride of the time. The Paradestein is more than just a stone monument. It is a tangible link to a fascinating chapter in Hanover’s history. A silent storyteller standing proudly amidst the changing times.
