Did you know that this seemingly ordinary plaque marks a place once known as the “Paprikaturm”? It is a reminder of a unique chapter in Chemnitz’s history. The Paprikaturm Plaque commemorates the time when this building, now the Seaside Residenz Hotel, served as a home for Hungarian factory workers.

Let us go back about 50 years. The city now known as Chemnitz was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. In that time, the first 800 Hungarian contract workers arrived here. They came to work in the city’s factories. The Paprikaturm became their temporary home. It was a 14-story prefabricated building.

Imagine these young men. They left their homes in Hungary. They sought a new life and work in the DDR. The rules were strict. Only single men were allowed. They could only stay for three years. They were not allowed to have their own apartments or change jobs.

Gyula Palacsik was one of those first residents in 1967. He wanted to stand on his own two feet as a young worker. So he followed the call to the DDR. He worked as a mechanical engineer. In 1969, he met his wife, Raija. Because of this, he was allowed to return to the DDR in 1973. Gyula stayed. He became a qualified engineer. He said Chemnitz gave him a fulfilling life.

The Paprikaturm became a symbol of this connection. It represented both the opportunities and the restrictions of that time. The city’s residents gave it the nickname “Paprikaturm”. Perhaps it was a nod to the Hungarian heritage of its inhabitants. Or maybe it was inspired by the building’s appearance.

In 2017, a plaque was unveiled here. It was a joint effort by the city and the Hungarian Cultural Association. The Paprikaturm Plaque serves as a lasting reminder of these workers’ contributions and their integration into Chemnitz society.

The Seaside Residenz Hotel has transformed since then. The tiny flats have become luxury rooms. Now guests from all over the world stay here. Chemnitz was named the European Capital of Culture 2025. The Paprikaturm Plaque reminds us of the city’s ever-changing story. It is a story of industry, migration, and cultural exchange. It is a story etched in metal. It’s a story worth remembering.
