How about a musical interlude amidst the greenery? That’s precisely what the Papageno-Theater offers. This charming theater resides in Frankfurt’s Palmengarten. It provides a unique cultural experience for both young and old.
The Papageno-Theater started its journey in 1997. Hans-Dieter Maienschein and his wife Renate founded it. Early performances took place in the Siesmayer-Saal. This hall is located in the Palmengarten’s Gesellschaftshaus. Maienschein first appeared as Papageno here in 1998. He performed in his own production of The Little Magic Flute. The character Papageno became the theater’s namesake.
In March 1999, the Papageno-Theater gained a permanent venue. It was a large circus tent within the Palmengarten. Unfortunately, the tent collapsed in 2002 due to heavy rain. This left the theater without a performance space.
Fortunately, the Dietmar Hopp Foundation provided financial support. A steel arch structure was erected on the same site. It was covered with a green, opaque membrane. The Papageno-Theater has used this structure since January 2003. The auditorium is fully air-conditioned. It seats 199 people.
The Papageno-Theater offers diverse performances. Children enjoy musical interpretations of stories. These include Jim Knopf and Lukas the Engine Driver. Pippi Longstocking and The Robber Hotzenplotz are also performed. Adults can attend musical, opera, and operetta performances. Johann Strauss’ The Gypsy Baron is one example.
In 2019, the Papageno-Theater premiered the music drama The Children of the Dead City. Sarah Kass conceived the idea and pedagogical concept. Lars Hesse composed the music. Thomas Auerswald wrote the book and song lyrics. The work tells the story of children imprisoned in the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1944. It is based on true events. Iris Berben sponsored the production.
The Frankfurter Rundschau praised the production. They noted the excellent children’s choir. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung highlighted the serious theme. They commended Hans-Dieter Maienschein for his direction. He co-directed with his son Niklas.
Hans-Dieter Maienschein was born in Frankfurt-Riederwald. He entertained younger children with self-invented plays. By age nine, he fell in love with opera. The Papageno-Theater aims to captivate its audience. It uses music to enhance the mood of plays, operas, and fairy tales. Classical music introduces children to theater and opera.
The Papageno-Theater also provides a platform for emerging singers. They participate in opera performances, operettas, and musicals. The theater’s concert series is very successful.
The Papageno-Theater faced challenges during its 25th anniversary in 2021/22. The Corona crisis had a significant impact. Instead of galas, Maienschein created a jubilee edition. It included a picture book, a CD, and a DVD. The DVD documented the theater’s history.
In June 2023, the Papageno-Theater and Hans-Dieter Maienschein received the Berg-Berndt-Preis. The Kuratorium Kulturelles Frankfurt awarded it. It recognized their outstanding contributions to arts and cultural education for children and youth.
In May 2024, world-renowned baritone Željko Lučić performed a benefit concert. Strahinja Lučić accompanied him on piano. He sang arias by Verdi and Giordano. The concert raised awareness for necessary renovations.
