“Luisa Sancho Mata” is inscribed on a sarcophagus. It marks the final resting place within the Panteón Guirao.
The Panteón Guirao stands as a mausoleum. It showcases modern art. It is located in Madrid’s Sacramental de San Isidro. Luis Federico Guirao commissioned it. He wanted to honor his wife Luisa Sancho Mata after her death in 1907.
Agustín Querol Subirats designed the Panteón Guirao. Querol was a Catalan sculptor. He started the project in 1908. Sadly, he died in 1909 before it was completed. His workshop finished the work in 1911.
The Panteón Guirao is in the Patio de la Concepción. This is a historical part of the Sacramental de San Isidro cemetery. Four tall cypress trees surround the Panteón Guirao. They mark its location. The mausoleum faces west. It stands at the center of the patio.
A double base supports the sarcophagus. Luisa Sancho Mata’s name is on it. A large cross rises from behind the sarcophagus. A chrismon is engraved on the cross. Sculptures surround the cross. There are fourteen figures in total. Seven are angels. The angels seem to guide humans. The human figures show pain and suffering. Allegories represent virtues. These include Charity Forgiveness Compassion and Alms.
The Panteón Guirao has a strong sense of design. Querol created a stone mass. It merges all the sculptures. The sculptures move upward toward the cross. They want to escape the stone that traps them. Querol created a dynamic composition. It shows life’s fleeting nature. It also shows the transition of death.
Ignacio de Aldama Elorz created a crypt. It lies below the sculptures. A gate decorated with plants closes the crypt. Francisco Torras Codina created the iron gate. It features an Art Nouveau design. The Panteón Guirao was once enclosed by a fence. This fence is now lost.
The Panteón Guirao is a masterpiece. It combines architecture and sculpture. It evokes emotion. It is a tribute to Luisa Sancho Mata. It stands as a symbol of love and remembrance.
The Panteón Guirao remains a testament to artistic vision. It also reminds us of life’s beauty and brevity. It blends different artistic elements. These create a powerful and moving memorial.
