That aroma isn’t just coffee. It’s history. Right here in front of us stands Pann’s Coffee Shop a true Los Angeles icon.
Pann’s isn’t just a diner it’s a time capsule. It opened in 1958. George and Rena Panagopoulos poured their hearts into this place. Their son Jim later lovingly restored it. It’s a testament to their legacy.
This isn’t your average breakfast joint. Pann’s boasts Googie architecture. That’s a futuristic style from the mid-20th century. Think flying saucers and space-age curves. Helen Liu Fong designed this beauty. She also designed other legendary LA diners like Johnie’s and Norm’s. Pann’s is one of the best-preserved examples of Googie design. The Los Angeles Times even said so.
The food is classic diner fare. Chicken-fried steak patty melts Cobb salads and fried chicken. But it’s more than just the food. It’s the atmosphere. The red leather booths the long bar the friendly waitresses who call you honey. It’s like stepping onto a retro movie set. Many films and TV shows have been filmed here. Although contrary to popular belief Pulp Fiction wasn’t filmed here. It was at another Poulos family restaurant Holly’s.
Pann’s even has a snappy motto Just Food Service and Rock & Roll. Ed Begley Jr even told a story about bumping into Cesar Chavez here in the 1980s. Rena Poulos the matriarch lived to 100. She passed in 2017 leaving behind a beloved institution.
Pann’s has received a Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award. This place isn’t just a restaurant it’s a piece of LA history a place where good people and good food naturally come together. So enjoy your coffee and your pancake and remember you are in a piece of history.
