Did you know that Pandan Lake Recreation Site was once prawn farming grounds? Before Jurong’s industrialization, this area was filled with swamps. Sungei Jurong and Sungei Pandan were the most productive prawn farming areas in Singapore. Kampongs and villagers thrived here until the mid-1960s.
Now, welcome to Pandan Lake Recreation Site. This area has transformed significantly over the years. In 1974, Pandan Reservoir was created by enclosing the swamps of the Sungei Pandan estuary with an earthen dyke. The reservoir provides non-potable water to surrounding industrial areas. Jurong Industrial Estate benefits from this water source.
Raw water from Pandan Reservoir is treated at the Choa Chu Kang Waterworks. After treatment, it is distributed throughout western Singapore. The reservoir also became a recreation site. The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club called it home from 1966 to 1999.
Pandan Reservoir later underwent renewal. This happened under PUB’s Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters program. This initiative added water sports facilities to the area.
Today, Pandan Lake Recreation Site offers various activities. Canoeing, kayaking, rowing, sailing, and sport fishing are popular. The mangroves at the mouth of Sungei Pandan host diverse birds and sea animals.
A new amenities center houses the offices of National Sports Associations. These associations support canoeing, sailing, and rowing. Viewing and fishing platforms are available. There are also designated areas for radio-controlled sailing and electric boating. These features allow people to enjoy the reservoir and its surroundings.
Singapore Canoe Federation is located here. You can visit their website for more information about kayaking and canoeing. The Singapore Rowing Association also has a presence here. Their website provides details about rowing activities.
PUB opened reservoirs for water sports in 2004. This initiative falls under the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Programme. Activities include kayaking, dragon boating, fishing, and radio control sailing. Electric boating is also permitted in designated areas. These efforts bring the community closer to the water. They also help people appreciate this precious resource.
Remember to follow a few guidelines. Use only electric boats for radio control sailing. This maintains the reservoir’s water quality. Launch boats from designated decks. Remove boats from the water when not in use. Carry out activities within designated areas. Ensure children are accompanied by adults.
Pandan Lake Recreation Site requires covered footwear at all times. This protects you in the natural habitat of aquatic animals. Do not immerse yourself in the reservoir unless necessary due to falling or capsizing. Be considerate of others. Ensure your actions do not cause inconvenience. Let’s all do our part to keep this environment clean.
So, as you enjoy the activities at Pandan Lake Recreation Site, remember its history. From prawn farms to a vital water source and recreational hub, it has truly transformed. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and the opportunities it offers.
