Slipping through time, we find ourselves in 1840s Athens. King Otto, eager to transform his new capital, summons skilled craftsmen from across Greece. Among them are the builders of Anafi, a small Cycladic island known for its masterful carpenters and stone masons. Drawn to Athens by the promise of work on the King’s palace, these islanders settle on the northeastern slopes of the Acropolis. Homes rise, mirroring those of their beloved Anafi. Whitewashed walls, cubic shapes, and bursts of bougainvillea create a pocket of island charm within the bustling city. This becomes Anafiotika, “Little Anafi.” Panagiotakou is a stop on the Piraeus-Perama Light Railway that once served this unique neighborhood. Imagine the islanders, after a long day working on the grand palace, stepping off the tram at Panagiotakou. The scent of wild thyme mingles with the salty breeze carried up from the distant sea. They climb the narrow, cobbled streets, the sounds of the city fading behind them. They reach their haven, a slice of Anafi nestled beneath the Acropolis. The railway ceased operation in 1977, but Panagiotakou remains a gateway to this hidden gem. While the tram no longer runs, the spirit of the Anafiotes lives on. Their legacy endures in the whitewashed walls and vibrant bougainvillea that still grace Anafiotika. Fewer than 50 of the original houses remain, a testament to the passage of time and the changing city. Each house, a small piece of Anafi, whispers tales of skilled hands and island dreams. Panagiotakou, a name echoing a forgotten railway, connects us to this story, reminding us of the islanders who shaped a corner of Athens in their image.
