Originally part of Canillejas Palomas was a haven of orchards and small family farms. Abundant water flowed from intermittent streams and aquifers. This water even supplied Madrid through an ancient aqueduct. Can you imagine the tranquil sounds of water running through the area? The scent of blooming flowers and ripening fruit in the air?
The first homes appeared in the 1930s. They were modest family homes. Small plots allowed space for gardens. Many families used wells for water. Aquifers provided ample water supply then.
The construction of Avenida de America changed Palomas forever. It created a physical separation between Canillejas and these settlements. The transformation of airport access into a highway further isolated Palomas. The year 1949 marked a significant change. The Ministry of Governance dissolved the Canillejas town council. Canillejas became part of Madrid. Palomas’s identity was redefined too. In 1987 Palomas separated from Canillejas and joined the Hortaleza district.
The 1960s brought rapid growth. Vallehermoso a construction company began a housing project in Palomas. Ironically the project intended housing for military personnel at Torrejon Air Base. They didn’t win the contract but some American families moved to Palomas. This created a unique blend of cultures.
Today Palomas is a blend of old and new. Colonia Piovera and Colonia Palomas retain their original charm. Despite some unplanned and excessive construction. Arroyo del Santo is a modern area with wide streets and high-rise buildings. Its streets and buildings showcase the evolution. Palomas is a story etched in concrete and brick.
