Palomar Energy Center is a 550-megawatt facility. San Diego Gas & Electric Company owns and operates it. It sits within the Escondido Research and Technology Center industrial park. The location is near the intersection of Vineyard Avenue and Enterprise Street.
Commissioned on April 1 2006 Palomar Energy Center uses a combination of natural gas and steam-driven turbines to generate electricity. State energy officials have praised it. They say it is over 30% more efficient than older power plants in the region. This efficiency comes at a price. The combustion turbines operate near their maximum output. This causes wear and tear on the equipment.
To prevent breakdowns the Palomar Energy Center follows a strict maintenance program. Major overhauls are performed regularly. Originally these tasks involved renting portable cranes. These cranes lifted heavy replacement parts. Moving these cranes around the small site was difficult. It increased yearly maintenance costs.
The solution was ingenious. Engineers designed and built a fixed galvanized steel overhead bridge crane. This replaced the cumbersome portable cranes. The new crane reduced operating costs. It also decreased downtime for equipment servicing. The risk of unbalanced crane loads was minimized. The result is a safer more efficient working environment. It improved the facility’s reliability.
The crane’s construction involved hot-dip galvanizing. Large triangular structures and heavy steel beam trusses were used. These formed the elevated crane rail system. The design maximized the galvanizing kettles operating parameters. This ensured efficient project cost control. The crane has a 65-ton main hook and a 15-ton auxiliary hook. Both can be operated locally or remotely.
Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for its corrosion control properties. The crane operates in a harsh coastal environment. This ensures the Palomar Energy Center remains in service for decades.
Cattrac’s Construction services played a vital role in preparing the site. Approximately 2 million cubic yards of rock and dirt were removed. The Palomar Energy Center was lowered by 40 feet. This reduced plant noise. It also made the plant more visually appealing to its neighbors.
Looking ahead the Palomar Energy Center is pioneering green hydrogen technology. Solar panels will generate electricity to produce green hydrogen.
