Amidst the hustle of Palomar College, a silent sentinel keeps watch. The Palomar College Clock Tower, a beacon of time and tradition, has witnessed generations of students come and go. It’s more than just a clock; it’s a landmark, a meeting place, a symbol of the college itself. The Palomar College Clock Tower was erected in 1975, a project funded by the dedicated Patrons of Palomar College. This group, formed in 1947, tirelessly fundraised for various college initiatives, from scholarships to equipping the student newspaper, The Telescope. Imagine students, faculty, staff, and the Patrons themselves, coming together to build this iconic structure. This wasn’t a hired crew; this was a community effort. The tower’s design, a striking blend of wood and metal, was the brainchild of Palomar art instructor Harry Bliss. Four telephone poles form the base, supporting the towering red-stained wooden structure that reaches towards the sky. The metal clock faces, with their gleaming gold hands, tell the time to all who pass by. Its vertical wooden beams evoke the image of a traditional cathedral tower. The clock tower isn’t just a timepiece; it’s a work of art. In 1992, the area around the Palomar College Clock Tower was transformed with the addition of Carillon Court, a circular space featuring brick benches and lush lawns, designed by Rick Kratcoski. This became a central gathering spot, a place for students to meet friends, study, or simply enjoy the campus atmosphere. For over four decades, the Palomar College Clock Tower faithfully chimed, marking the hours and playing a selection of songs four times a day. But time takes its toll. In early 2010, the clock fell silent. One of the hands had fallen off, and the faces were damaged. A much-needed renovation was in order. The same company that originally built the tower, Mass-Rowe Carillons, was called upon to restore it to its former glory. This wasn’t just a repair job; it was an artistic endeavor. The clock builders meticulously restored the faces, hands, gears, and motors. A new digital sound system was installed, preserving the old collection of songs on a USB drive. The familiar chimes returned, breaking the monotony of the day and reminding everyone of the passage of time. The Palomar College Clock Tower stands tall, a testament to the dedication and artistry of those who built and restored it. It continues to serve as a symbol of Palomar College, a reminder of its rich history and its vibrant community.
