What began as a dream in the hearts of community leaders has blossomed into the vibrant Palo Alto College. Founded in 1983, Palo Alto College stands as a beacon of educational opportunity in San Antonio. It is one of five separately accredited colleges in the Alamo Colleges District.

Palo Alto College was officially chartered by the Texas Legislature on March 19, 1983. The college’s story began with just 231 students. These students attended classes in high schools and military installations. The administrative offices were first located at Billy Mitchell Village.

Communities Organized for Public Service spearheaded the college’s creation. This predominantly Hispanic grassroots organization helped build an institution of higher learning in the historically underserved south side of San Antonio. Palo Alto College opened its doors in January 1987. Its physical outline is inspired by 18th-century Spanish mission architecture. Mission San José’s cupola and facade influenced the campus design. The granary’s distinctive cylindrical shape is also reflected in the architecture. Adorned tiles embedded in buildings convey the spirit of Spanish Colonial architecture.

Palo Alto College has grown significantly. As of 2007–2008, the college had 7,662 students enrolled. The college is set on nearly 126 acres of land. Palo Alto College has over 100 staff members and full-time faculty members. PAC’s original complex included 11 buildings and 26 classrooms. In 1989, the college achieved full accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This accreditation was reaffirmed in June 2012.

The college provides several programs in logistics and supply chain management. These programs are available at the associate degree and certificate levels. In Spring 2024, Palo Alto College started offering a Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management.

Palo Alto College continues to evolve. It adapts to cultural distinctions and contemporary academic needs. The college shares its campus and resources to improve San Antonio’s growing community.

Remember the words of Palo Alto College’s mission statement. It seeks to inspire, empower, and educate our community for leadership and success.
