The Palmenhofbunker, a two-story relic of wartime desperation, became the last refuge for high-ranking Nazi officials during the five-day battle for Nuremberg in April 1945. Originally intended as an air raid shelter under Richard Wolf, it transformed into a command center. From these cold, concrete walls, Gauleiter Karl Holz directed the city’s hopeless defense, even as American troops celebrated their victory in the Hauptmarkt. Within the bunker’s confines, a tragic scene unfolded. Nuremberg’s mayor, Willy Liebel, met his end with a gunshot to the head. Holz himself perished on April 20, 1945. The Palmenhofbunker, sealed off from the public in 2023, lies hidden within the Nuremberg police headquarters. This building, a former Ulanen barracks, once housed the Gestapo, who imprisoned countless regime opponents before their deportation to Dachau. The Palmenhofbunker remains inaccessible, a silent testament to Nuremberg’s turbulent past.
