Palm Island emerged from the turquoise waters in 1922. The Army Corps of Engineers, finished dredging up this slice of paradise. They also created nearby Hibiscus and Star Island. Palm Island quickly became a haven for the rich and famous. But perhaps its most notorious resident was Al Capone. “Scarface” himself bought a summer home here in 1928 for a cool $40,000. He then poured another $200,000 into making it his fortress. After his release from prison in 1939, Capone made Palm Island his permanent residence. He lived here until his death in 1947. Imagine the stories these palm trees could tell. The echoes of jazz music, the clinking of champagne glasses. Maybe even a hushed conversation. Today, Palm Island remains a highly sought-after address. It is home to celebrities and business tycoons. But the legend of Al Capone still lingers.
