About 30000 people call Pally Mangal home. Most families are Hindu. Many are Bengalis. Others are migrant workers from other Indian states.
Life in Pally Mangal is a complex mix of challenges and opportunities. Men find work as chauffeurs rickshaw pullers or in small businesses. Some unfortunately succumb to gambling or alcohol. This places a heavy burden on the women. Many women work as domestic servants. This is often low-paying and exploitative work. Illiteracy is a major hurdle. It limits their employment options. Young girls often follow in their mothers’ footsteps entering domestic service at a young age.
However there is hope. The Italghata Pally Mangal Samity a local organization played a crucial role. A group of 30 boys started the Samity. Their first act was cleaning up the area. The local police helped them clear out drinking dens. The Samity then found jobs for families whose livelihoods depended on the alcohol trade.
The Cathedral Relief Service CRS joined in 1996. They focused on empowering women. They started programs teaching tailoring embroidery and beautician skills. These programs created self-help groups. Women started businesses and found new opportunities. The CRS also launched an educational programme. This helped many slum children. Funding ended in 2012. The program unfortunately had to close.
Today the women’s empowerment program continues. It supports about 400 families. Women learn valuable skills. They build businesses and improve their lives. Success stories abound. Namita Ghosh a resident of Pally Mangal transformed her life. She learned tailoring and beauty skills. She now teaches at a hotel management institute and sells her creations. Asha Haldar another resident overcame hardship. She escaped an abusive marriage. She now runs her own beauty parlour and hopes to give her sons a better life.
Pally Mangal is more than just a neighbourhood. It’s a testament to resilience community spirit and the power of empowerment. It’s a place where challenges are met with courage hope and the unwavering support of neighbours and organizations like the CRS and Italghata Pally Mangal Samity. It’s a story of transformation.
