Gazing up at Palisades Charter High School, can you imagine its humble beginnings? This wasn’t always the sprawling campus you see before you. Originally, this land was known as All Hallows Farm, a picturesque property once owned by the Conway family. Hollywood director Jack Conway, his actress wife Virginia, and their sons, including actor Pat Conway, called this place home. Later, even Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher rented the farm. But destiny had other plans for All Hallows Farm. In 1961, the state acquired the land, transforming it into the most expensive high school in the LA City Schools system at that time: Palisades Charter High School.

Palisades Charter High School, affectionately known as “Pali High” or simply “Pali,” opened its doors with a hefty $6 million price tag. Herbert L. Aigner, the school’s founding principal, led the charge. Now, decades later, Pali High stands as a testament to its rich history and unwavering commitment to education. It has earned its place as one of the most highly ranked public high schools in the competitive Los Angeles landscape.

Pali High’s story intertwines with both academic achievements and pop culture phenomena. In 2005, the school proudly accepted the title of California Distinguished School. A few years later, both Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report recognized it as one of America’s Best High Schools. Did you know that the school even played a role in shaping a Star Wars character? Beloved English teacher Rose “Mama G” Gilbert, who taught at Pali High for an astounding 63 years, served as the inspiration for Maz Kanata.

The school’s history isn’t without its challenges. In the early 1990s, dwindling enrollment threatened Pali High’s very existence. LAUSD considered closing the school. But the community rallied. Parents, staff, and Principal Merle Price championed the idea of transforming Pali High into a charter school. This bold move paid off. By 1998, enrollment rebounded. Pali High even attracted students back from private schools. More recently, the devastating January 2025 Southern California wildfires forced the school to temporarily close, damaging nearly half the campus.

Pali High also boasts a unique claim to fame. It’s “Stadium by the Sea,” located just a mile from Will Rogers State Beach. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean offers a breathtaking backdrop for sporting events. The campus itself has been a popular filming location. Scenes from Olivia Rodrigo’s chart-topping music video “Good 4 U” were shot here. It’s no surprise that many students travel long distances, some bused from over 100 different Los Angeles zip codes, just to attend Palisades Charter High School.
