Did you know Palisades Presbyterian Church started because some Presbyterians missed church? Mr. Winthrop Gilman led this group. They couldn’t stand not having religious services on Sundays. This was while they were visiting their country homes.
In the spring of 1863, they decided to build a small church. They also wanted a young minister. Rev. Joseph Greenleaf became the first pastor on May 11, 1863. He held services in the Methodist church. The Methodist church was on Closter Road. This happened while the Palisades Presbyterian Church was being built.
Mr. Charles F. Park donated the land for the church. His widow gave the land for the manse two years later. Construction began on June 1, 1863. The first service was on January 3, 1864. Mr. Park and Mr. Gilman rang the bell for the first time on New Year’s Eve 1863.
The Palisades Presbyterian Church celebrated its 25th anniversary on October 13, 1888. W.S. Gilman wrote words that still ring true. He spoke of precious memories of the living and the dead. He remembered joys and sorrows within these walls. He believed those connected to the church would remember it fondly. He said this connection to Christ’s followers would be a keenly remembered joy. This little band was organized in Palisades in the autumn of 1863.
Today, Palisades Presbyterian Church welcomes everyone. It doesn’t matter abilities or age. Gender and identity don’t matter. Race, ethnicity, marital status, and sexual orientation don’t matter. Citizenship and socioeconomic status don’t matter. Where you are in your faith journey doesn’t matter.
The church celebrates full participation in its life. They invite you to join them. Join with your whole self. Journey with one another and with God. Strive to participate in God’s transformation of the world.
Worship services are held every Sunday at 10:00 AM. They celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of each month. Children are welcome. Everyone is invited to receive communion. Services include prayer praise and music. There is also confession and a message. Giving and a benediction are included too. Hymn books are in the pews. You will receive a bulletin. The bulletin has the order of worship. This lets everyone share fully in every service.
Ushers will greet you. They will answer your questions. The pastor greets everyone after the service. You’re invited to coffee hour in the Parish House. When you visit, you are a respected guest. You won’t be singled out or asked to stand. You will simply worship God.
The Palisades Presbyterian Church’s sanctuary is beautiful. Its location is ideal for weddings. Church facilities are mainly for church programs. The church considers requests to use the Parish House. It also considers using the driveway. This is when it benefits the local community. The Parish House is an open space. It has a fully equipped kitchen. It also has an ADA compliant restroom. Folding chairs and tables are available.
Palisades Presbyterian Church has a rich history. It continues to be a welcoming community. It shares God’s love with all.
