Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Jerusalem’s Old City lies the Palestinian Pottery. It’s a place where history and artistry intertwine. The story of Palestinian Pottery began in 1919. Neshan Balian Sr. and Mgerdich Karakashian, two skilled ceramic artists, arrived in Jerusalem from Kütahya, Turkey. They were recruited to restore the decaying tiles of the Dome of the Rock. Although the project faced setbacks and eventually fell through, it planted the seeds for something new. In 1922, Balian and Karakashian opened their own workshop on Nablus Road, marking the birth of the Palestinian Pottery. They brought with them the iconic Kütahya style, a blend of Turkish, Persian, and Armenian influences. They incorporated Palestinian artistic elements, creating a unique fusion of cultures. The Palestinian Pottery became a melting pot of creativity. It blended geometric patterns, floral motifs, and animal depictions, showcasing the diverse heritage of the region. In 1965, the partnership dissolved. The Balian family continued the legacy at the original workshop. Today, the Palestinian Pottery is run by Neshan Balian Jr., the grandson of the founder. He carries on the tradition. He upholds the multicultural ethos of the workshop. It employs both Arab and Armenian artists, Muslims and Christians working side-by-side. The Palestinian Pottery is more than just a business. It is a testament to resilience, artistry, and the enduring power of cultural exchange. Every piece created here carries with it a century of history, a story whispered through the clay and glaze.
